Abstract
This article is a review and update on stroke, the third leading cause of death in the United States. After reading the information presented, readers should be able to: Outline the etiology of stroke. Differentiate between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Correlate stroke symptoms with the origin of the stroke. List risk factors and identify modifiable risk factors for stroke. Discuss the various imaging techniques used to diagnose stroke. Summarize the emergency work-up for suspected stroke patients. Identify current treatment options.
